Week 5

Blankets was a lot
different then I expected it to be. I saw the art and was immediately enticed,
it was so loose, sketching and simple that it drew me in immediately and I was
excepting a light-hearted romance story. What I found quickly was it was a lot more
dark, serious and controversial then I thought it would be. Quickly, I realized
that this was more a story of adolescence and the struggles young teens face
growing up. Struggles with love, religion and a rapidly changing body and
lifestyle. Some of the subjects that they broached were shocking and
unexpected, but worked great for the story as it kept me interested and
reading. The ending was, melancholy to say the least. Their break up was
inevitable and it really added to the story, as it is a true account of how
these things usually go. You don’t often find “the one” on your first try or in
high school. It made this story feel very real and for many young readers, I
imagine this comic had great meaning for them. But, besides the craziness of
the story, I did thoroughly enjoy the art and style of the comic. It was beautifully
drawn and very engaging to read. A fantastic comic.
